The Sil Canyon is one of Galicia’s most striking natural treasures, renowned for the breathtaking landscapes of the Sil canyon and its millennia-old wine-making tradition. Located very close to it, Pazo de Chaioso is the ideal starting point for exploring both its monasteries and Romanesque vineyards , as well as the beauty of its natural surroundings.

Points of interest

Here are some of our recommendations:

  • The Viewpoint Trail: There are quite a few, and we’d be delighted to advise you, based on our own judgement, on how to find the most spectacular ones in the area.

  • Catamaran on the River Sil: A unique perspective from the river, ideal for appreciating the heroic viticulture on the steep slopes.

  • Monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil: An architectural gem surrounded by ancient forests that tells the living history of Ourense.

  • San Pedro de Rocas: This is the oldest monastic complex in Galicia and the only one where part of its original structure remains, consisting of artificial caves carved into the rock that served as a chapel and the chancel of a medieval church.

Wine tourism and local cuisine

The Ribeira Sacra cannot be understood without its wine (D.O. Ribeira Sacra). As guests of the Pazo, we can direct you to family-run wineries where the Mencía and Godello grapes take centre stage.
